In nature, beauty is often the result of change, transition, and complex reformation; the way intricate and organic zone lines found in spalted wood are a result of fungi and decay that consumes the tree; or the formation of stones and crystals exist from extreme pressure. This collection of decorative objects and wall hangings is inspired by the evolution of these natural forms and how they coincide with us. It’s the study of the delicate balance we try to maintain within our ever changing lives in a world of unpredictability.
Each piece is an assemblage created by hand with an array of mixed natural materials. These materials collide in a way that in moments seem turbulent and uncontrolled (much like life). Ornate patterns are combined with dimensional geometric shapes and layered with materials like raffia that form these uncanny disruptions of organic orbits around the forms. The chaos is then tamed and neutralized by the use of symmetry with dominant applications of the sphere and the muted palette of creams and light warm wood tones. Perfection becomes abstract. The use of symmetry in the forms represents the balance we strive to maintain amidst the abundance of overwhelming circumstances we are confronted with everyday, and very often all at once.
How we evolve, the way we grow... it's a process that consists of tribulation, loss, pain, and heartache. But we somehow manage to sustain, to smile and laugh, to find the balance,
the good in it all, the collateral beauty.
The Inspiration
The Artist
Filana Turner - Paul
Filana Turner-Paul’s passion for interior design was ignited by her desire to define and cultivate an inspiring space for her and her family. Despite the challenges and turmoil of the world, she found solace in the beauty of the everyday and the natural materials that surrounded her- inside and outside of her home. She began experimenting with different textures and elements, including spalted maple, spotted oak, and fire glass.
Filana uses the world around her as a limitless source of inspiration, drawing upon the natural beauty to create work that uplifts and inspires others. Her insatiable curiosity and fascination with the smallest details and minutiae of the everyday allows her to capture the beauty and potential of every moment. She seeks to share her sense of optimism and awe with others, revealing the wonder and possibility that exists all around us.
Filana Turner-Paul was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design. This is her first body of work outside of her design work with brands that include Armani, Gap, and Tommy Hilfiger. She currently lives in Orange, NJ, with her husband, two children, two dogs and their African Grey.
